Music at Wickersley Northfield
Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important part in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world around them. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music.
Musical Activities at Wickersley Northfield
At Wickersley Northfield we are lucky to have lots of instruments to use in our lessons. We have a class set of boomwhackers and ukuleles as well as lots of percussion instruments! We have recently invested in class sets of recorders and glockenspiels and we are very much enjoyable learning more about how to play these.
We also offer extra-curricular opportunities to develop musical skills. Our school choir perform in a number of events each year. You can also learn an instrument through Rotherham Music Hub.
Threshold Concepts
Music can be divided into four concepts:
Perform
This concept involves understanding that music is created to be
performed.
Compose
This concept involves appreciating that music is created through a
process which has a number of techniques.
Transcribe
This concept involves understanding that compositions need to be
understood by others and that there are techniques and a language
for communicating them.
Describe music
This concept involves appreciating the features and effectiveness of
musical elements.

Breadth of Study
EYFS
- Aspects of musical learning in EYFS are split into the following aspects: hearing and listening, vocalising and singing, moving and dancing, exploring and playing.
- Share their ideas and opinions about music.
- Be able to sing entire songs.
- Be able to sing a melodic shape and internalise music.
- Move in time to a piece of music.
- Create rhythms using instruments and body percussion.
Key Stage 1
- Use their voices expressively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
- Play tuned and un-tuned instruments musically.
- Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-
quality live and recorded music. - Make and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of
music.
Key Stage 2
- Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using voice and
playing instruments with increasing accuracy, control and expression. - Improvise and compose music using the inter-related dimensions of
